What is GitHub Universe?

GitHub Universe is GitHub’s annual flagship conference, focused on software development, DevOps, and the broader open source ecosystem. It features product announcements, engineering deep dives, and sessions on topics like AI, CI/CD, and developer productivity.

The event brings together developers, teams, and enterprise leaders to explore GitHub’s latest tools and roadmap. It typically includes workshops, demos, and networking opportunities, both in-person and virtual.

Navigating the event

Here are some things to know before going this year:

When and where is GitHub Universe 2025 taking place?

GitHub Universe 2025 is scheduled to take place October 28–29, 2025, at the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture in San Francisco, California. You can attend in person or virtually.

Registration

Registration for GitHub Universe officially opened on May 13, 2025, and will remain open until all passes sell out.

Following an initial early-bird rate, the full rate is $1,499 USD.

Group discounts are also available: 25 % off for purchases of three or more passes, and 35 % off for groups of eight or more. In addition to standard registration, GitHub offers discounted rates for students and nonprofit organizations upon request.

Virtual attendance is free and includes livestream access to keynotes and on-demand sessions.

Accommodation

GitHub has partnered with several hotels in the Fisherman’s Wharf area to provide attendees with convenient accommodation at discounted rates. After registration, these hotel blocks are available exclusively through the event’s attendee portal.

Fisherman’s Wharf offers a great base, with scenic waterfront views, nearby dining, and direct access to public transportation.

Getting there

The event will be held at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco’s Marina District. It’s easily reachable via Muni, rideshares, and even walking or biking from nearby neighborhoods. Shuttle service details (if provided by GitHub) will be listed in the attendee portal closer to the event date.

Air travel options:

  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO) – The most accessible airport for domestic and international travelers. It’s about 25 minutes from downtown by car or BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit)
  • Oakland International Airport (OAK) – Located across the Bay, roughly 35 minutes by car or BART
  • San Jose International Airport (SJC) – Slightly further out, around an hour by car or train (Caltrain), ideal for those staying in the South Bay

Local transport:

  • BART: Offers frequent service from both SFO and OAK to downtown San Francisco
  • Caltrain: A scenic option from San Jose into the city
  • Rideshare & Taxis: Widely available at all airports
