Overconfidence and the Speed-Control Paradox

Is overconfidence holding you back?

45% of teams believe they’re acing infrastructure automation — only 14% really are

We surveyed over 400 infrastructure decision makers to understand what sets leading high-performing organizations apart from the overconfident.
Leaders are:

  • More than twice as likely to have implemented Infrastructure-as-Code best practices.
  • Over three times as likely to have implemented automated testing for infrastructure changes
  • Five times more likely to have implemented a platform engineering team.

Speed has come at the cost of control

43% of respondents must rerun their infrastructure deployments at least 4 times

Control suffers when speed is prioritized — Facing pressure to ship faster, organizations fall into the Speed Control Paradox, with just 29% focusing on control. They may have accelerated deployment frequency, but unknowingly accept the risk of not putting the right guardrails in place.

Infrastructure Automation Leaders find a happy medium

Automation leaders are 33% more likely to see developer self-service as a route to lower risk

Leaders understand that developer self-serivce reduces risk rather than increases it. Prioritizing speed while setting standards for control addresses the Speed-Control Paradox, allowing leaders to build pipelines that deliver fast, predictable and secure deployments.

        Leadership has its privileges

The good news is that what leaders are doing isn’t a secret. Read our report to learn all about the behaviors, tools, and processes of Infrastructure Automation Leaders and the benefits that come with leadership.

As part of our research, we’ve developed the Infrastructure Automation Leadership Index to capture organizational maturity from basic automation practices to advanced, scalable and secure automated infrastructure management. We applied the index to the respondents to categorize them by their progress into one of four stages: Experimenter, Adopter, Optimizer and Leader.

Take our free self-assessment to determine where your organization ranks on the Infrastructure Automation Leadership Index. You’ll also receive tailored advice, best practices, and real-life examples of progression based on your results.
