Mission Infrastructure newsletter is a monthly digest of the latest posts from our blog, curated to give you the insights you need to advance your infrastructure game.

Over the last few months, we’ve been busy making Spacelift more flexible, powerful, and easier to use. To that end, we’ve released some exciting new features to help companies:

  • Increase their developer velocity by meeting them where they are
  • Increase repeatability, helping them automate even more of their infrastructure
  • Improve governance and compliance by choosing from more deployment options
  • Get better visibility into what has happened with their infrastructure and why
  • Increase speed by balancing it with control

In recent months, we’ve released:

  • Enterprise Deployment Options
    • Self-hosted on Azure & GCP
    • US Region – available for new customers
  • ServiceNow Integration
  • Ignored Run Warnings
  • Built-in Audit Trails
  • Generate Terraform Code from Stacks
  • Stack list UI/UX Upgrade
  • Cloud Integrations redesign
  • Spaces admins can create sub-spaces
  • Support Hyperlinks in Policy Messages
  • Increase pagination on stack view from 50 to 100 – bulk actions
  • New Single Sign-on settings page for SaaS users
  • Shareable Blueprints link
  • Notification Deduplication

Now let’s take a look at these features in more detail:

Enterprise deployment options

Previously, you could self-host Spacelift only in AWS, and the SaaS version was exclusively available in Europe. Now, you can self-host Spacelift in Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud as well, and new customers who want to leverage SaaS can use Spacelift in either a European or US region.

What problems does it solve, and what are the benefits?

Providing you with more options for where to host Spacelift addresses issues related to compliance, gives you more flexibility, and improves your overall governance.

ServiceNow integration

You can now provision your infrastructure from ServiceNow by leveraging the integration with Spacelift. This integration gives you a supercharged self-service model that meets your engineers where they are.

What problems does it solve, and what are the benefits?

This integration improves developer velocity, which can be a complex challenge, especially when it comes to provisioning and configuring infrastructure. Read more about developer velocity in this article.

This integration streamlines infrastructure requests for developers. They simply log into ServiceNow, locate the Service Catalog item linked to the Spacelift Blueprint, complete the form, and submit the order; Spacelift then creates the stack and can also deploy the infrastructure automatically.

Depending on the Blueprint’s capabilities, developers can provision and configure infrastructure, orchestrate containers, or handle all these tasks, based on how the platform team designed it.

Ignored run warnings

In Spacelift, runs are ignored for several reasons:

  • A change has been made outside of the root of the project.
  • A tag is pushed.
  • Push policies were applied that dismiss the commit or no push policies are attached and the default one is disabled.

With the ignored run warnings feature, you can now see which runs were ignored and why:

What problems does it solve, and what are the benefits?

It’s now easier to understand which runs were ignored and why, and you have a simple option for running them manually if you want to.

Previously, users would spend time troubleshooting why some runs were ignored, but this enhanced visibility means they can easily understand the reasons behind these ignored runs and take action accordingly.

Built-in Audit Trails

Audit Trails are key to identifying issues in your infrastructure and recovering from failures quickly. A built-in audit trail reduces the overhead of configuring your own audit trail, and you can get insights at a glance into what happened within your infrastructure.

What problems does it solve, and what are the benefits?

Our built-in Audit Trail aims to provide a faster and easier way to identify issues in your Spacelift account without needing to contact support.

You can:

  • Enable auditing without having to leverage webhooks and the underlying infrastructure that receives the data
  • Resolve issues with configuration changes faster by leveraging our filtering capabilities
  • Improve your compliance and governance workflow

Generate Terraform code from existing stacks

Suppose you’ve created a stack from the UI, and now you want an easy way to replicate it. You know that Spacelift has its own Terraform provider, but what can you do to simplify the workflow even further? Now you can easily leverage our Terraform code generator from existing stacks:

What problems does it solve, and what are the benefits?

This feature enhances reusability and gives you a way to easily automate even more of your infrastructure.

This includes the stack itself, all the stack settings, lifecycle hooks, environment variables, and attached contexts.

Stack list UI/UX Upgrade

Our stack view has a new design and offers many new options to help you understand what is happening to your stacks more easily.

What problems does it solve, and what are the benefits?

Enjoy greater visibility into your stack, with:

  • Customizable Columns — The stack list can be tailored to your needs. You can hide or resize columns directly in the list view and reorder items.
  • State-based tabs — You can now easily access the stacks that need your attention based on their status (unconfirmed, failed, on hold, in progress, completed).
  • Issues column — A new column highlights stacks that have detected drift and runs that require approval.

Cloud integrations redesign

Our cloud integrations page has a new design. We’ve introduced a search function to help you easily identify the cloud integrations, especially when you use this feature at scale.

What problems does it solve, and what are the benefits?

The new design makes it easy to use this feature at scale, and you can easily identify what stacks and modules are leveraging a particular integration.

Notification deduplication

Identical notifications in the user inbox are now aggregated into a single entry with a count of occurrences shown. This reduces the noise associated with identical notifications and gives you an overview of many identical notifications you’ve had, without you having to manually count them.

Increase pagination on stack view from 50 to 100

In our stack view, we have increased the pagination from 50 to 100. This is particularly useful when you want to use bulk actions on multiple stacks:

Space admins can now create child spaces

Space admins can now create child spaces, without having to rely on an organization admin. This takes partial admin rights to the next level, as it offers space admins the power to segregate rights to other users too.

To enable this feature, navigate to your Organization settings and select spaces:

Then, toggle on the option “Allow space admins to create and edit child spaces”:

New single sign-on (SSO) settings page for SaaS users

The SSO page has been revamped for our SaaS users so that it’s easier to set up SSO. It also provides valuable insights on how to do it.
