OpenTofu is having a moment. Github downloads are approaching two million (1,739,397 at last count with this script), downloads of Docker images have topped 400,000 (more here), and more than 23,000 installs in the past year.
Spacelift is a major contributor to OpenTofu, the open source fork of Terraform maintained by the Linux Foundation and the CNCF. Spacelift is one of the founding companies and initial maintainers of the project, and members of the Spacelift staff serve the OpenTofu community as major contributors and members of the technical steering committee.
In addition to the approaching two-million-downloads milestone, I want to share three happenings within the OpenTofu community that are well worth celebrating.
September marks the first anniversary of OpenTofu. A year later, the OpenTofu community can look back on an impressive first year of achievements, including:
- The OpenTofu repository was made publicly available on September 5, 2023.
- In January, version 1.6 brought OpenTofu into general availability (GA). Launching under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation and with the support of CNCF helped position OpenTofu as a leading open source IaC choice for enterprises.
- In March, the community produced the first OpenTofu Day at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2024. The event was attended by more than 180 participants who attended talks on deploying and running OpenTofu at scale.
- In April, version 1.7 delivered state encryption.
- In July, version 1.8 delivered early evaluation.
- Earlier this month, the beta of Registry UI was released.
Congratulations to the OpenTofu community on a very productive and successful first year!
Another step forward in the past year is Spacelift’s commitment to growing its upstream contributions to OpenTofu. We started by lending two Spacelift engineers full-time to the project. Over the past 12 months we have shifted from just lending Spacelift employees to committing dedicated engineers to the OpenTofu team.
Today we are proud to add Martin Atkins to the Spacelift OpenTofu team. He will focus exclusively on OpenTofu and joins a stellar team that includes Christian Mesh and James Humphries, both leading upstream contributors to the project. Martin is a prolific contributor to the world of open-source and the author of several community projects on which OpenTofu is built, including go-cty.
We couldn’t be more excited about Martin joining the team, and we look forward to the contributions he will make to the OpenTofu community.
Spacelift is a gold sponsor of OpenTofu Day at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2024 in Salt Lake City, Nevada, on November 12. The event convenes practitioners, experts and enthusiasts to discuss the essential topics of IaC. Sessions on the OpenTofu release roadmap, novel ideas in IaC and projects built on top of OpenTofu will be featured. Topics include successful migration stories, upgrades to the latest versions, lessons learned and community insights.
